Aramaic is a Semitic language which was the lingua franca of the ancient Near East from about the 7th century BC until the 7th century AD, when Arabic became more prominent. Aramaic is significant as the language which Jesus would have spoken and is retained as a liturgical language by some Christian communities in Syria, Lebanon and Iraq. Modern varieties of Aramaic are spoken as the first language of some small communities in the Middle East.
